We got to Mammoth late and tired and it was dark everywhere, so we ended up staying at the first place we came across. It was sort of weird - it had a huge safe box in the room, but the shower was falling apart. It also took us 20 minutes to check in since the gentlement behind the counter was training his daughter, who had no skills or interest in being a front desk person what so ever. They also told us that we were walking distance from the downtown, which turned out not to be the case at all. We ended up in an italian place that had good beer, but a drunken waiter. After receiving a very un-inviting look, he did not server our table. It was all very entertaining to a couple of women who just descended from the mountains. Hot shower seemed the peak of luxury to us, anyway.
